English Grammar Mastery: From Foundations to Fluency

The Parts of Speech System: Module Overview

1. Introduction

Every building has a structure. Bricks, beams, windows, and doors each play a distinct role — and understanding what each part does is the first step to understanding how the whole thing stands. Language works in much the same way. Every sentence in English is built from words, and every word belongs to a category that tells us what job that word does in the sentence.

Those categories are called the parts of speech. They are the foundation of English grammar — and they are where this course begins.

2. What This Module Covers

This module introduces the eight traditional parts of speech in English, followed by a focused lesson on how those parts combine to form complete sentences. By the time you reach the Module Summary, you will have a clear and reliable map of the English word system.

3. How This Module Fits into the Course

This module is the foundation on which every other module in the course rests. The grammatical terms introduced here — noun, verb, adjective, adverb, pronoun, preposition, conjunction, interjection — appear throughout all thirteen modules. A confident grasp of the parts of speech makes every subsequent topic easier to understand and easier to use.

Learners who already have some knowledge of the parts of speech will find this module a valuable consolidation. It fills gaps, corrects common misunderstandings, and ensures that your understanding of the basics is solid rather than approximate. Even experienced users of English often discover something new when they look carefully at the system as a whole.
