English Grammar Mastery: From Foundations to Fluency

In this module, you will learn how to transform, combine, and restructure sentences while preserving their meaning.

Transformation and synthesis are advanced grammar skills that require learners to apply multiple grammatical concepts simultaneously. Instead of focusing on a single rule, these tasks involve manipulating sentence structure while maintaining accuracy, clarity, and logical meaning.

Example:

Simple sentences:

The experiment was complex.
The results were significant.

Combined sentence:

Although the experiment was complex, the results were significant.

Transformation tasks help learners develop the ability to:

  • express the same idea using different grammatical structures

  • combine sentences to produce clear and coherent writing

  • reduce clauses to create more concise expressions

  • manipulate sentence patterns while maintaining grammatical correctness

Key Concepts in This Module

This module focuses on advanced sentence manipulation skills, including:

  • transforming sentences while preserving meaning

  • combining simple sentences into complex structures

  • reducing clauses using participles and infinitives

  • restructuring sentences using different grammatical patterns

You will also learn how to synthesise information from multiple clauses into clear and effective sentences.

Types of Sentence Transformation

Transformation involves changing a sentence into another grammatical form without altering its meaning.

Example:

Original sentence:

She was too tired to continue working.

Transformed sentence:

She was so tired that she could not continue working.

Both sentences express the same idea using different grammatical structures.

Sentence Combination

Sentence synthesis often involves combining multiple simple sentences into one complex sentence.

Example:

Simple sentences:

The device was tested carefully.
The device performed well.

Combined sentence:

Because the device was tested carefully, it performed well.

This process improves clarity, cohesion, and writing fluency.

Clause Reduction

Complex sentences may also be reduced into shorter grammatical structures.

Example:

Original sentence:

After she completed the report, she submitted it to the committee.

Reduced sentence:

Having completed the report, she submitted it to the committee.

Clause reduction is common in academic and formal writing.
