A. Structure
Subject + modal + be + past participle (V3)
Active:
Scientists must analyze the data.
Passive:
The data must be analyzed.
Active:

The project can be completed.
⚠ Rule:
Modal + be + V3
NOT modal + been (unless perfect modal)
B. Past Modal Passive
Structure:
modal + have + been + V3
Active:
They must have completed the task.
Passive:
The task must have been completed.
3. Passive with Two Objects
Some verbs take two objects:
give, send, offer, teach, show, award
Active:
The teacher gave the students homework.
Two passive forms are possible.
Option 1 (Indirect object becomes subject)
The students were given homework.
Option 2 (Direct object becomes subject)
Homework was given to the students.
Both are correct.
4. Get-Passive
Used in informal English.
Structure:
Subject + get + V3
He got injured during the match.
She got promoted last year.
Used for unexpected or negative situations.
More conversational than academic.
Academic writing prefers “be-passive.”
5. Passive Infinitive
Structure:
to be + V3
The report needs to be completed.
She wants the task to be finished.
Used after verbs like:
want, need, expect, ask, allow
6. Passive Gerund

being + V3
She dislikes being criticized.
He avoids being questioned.
