1. Lesson Overview
In this lesson, you will learn:
- Structure of all four main conditionals
• Logical differences between them
• Tense control rules
• When to use each type
• Common structural errors
2. Zero Conditional (Facts & Universal Truths)
Structure:
If + present simple, present simple
Used for:
- Scientific facts
• General truths
• Habitual results
Example:
If water reaches 100°C, it boils.
If you heat ice, it melts.
Both clauses remain in the present tense.
3. First Conditional (Real Future Possibility)
Structure:
If + present simple, will + base verb
Used for:
- Real future possibility
Example:
If it rains tomorrow, we will cancel the match.
If she studies hard, she will succeed.
Important:
Do NOT use “will” in the if-clause.
Incorrect:
If she will study, she will succeed.
Correct:
If she studies, she will succeed.
4. Second Conditional (Unreal Present / Hypothetical)
Structure:
If + past simple, would + base verb
Used for:
- Unreal present situations
• Imaginary ideas
Example:
If I were rich, I would travel the world.
If she studied harder, she would pass.
Formal usage:
“If I were” (subjunctive form)
5. Third Conditional (Unreal Past)
Structure:
If + past perfect, would have + V3
Used for:
- Past regret
• Imagined past results
Example:
If she had studied harder, she would have passed.
If they had left earlier, they would have arrived on time.
6. Structural Comparison

|
Second |

7. Common Errors
⚠ Mixed Conditional Error (Wrong Verb Combination)
Incorrect: If she studied hard, she will pass.
Correct: If she studies hard, she will pass.
⚠ Incorrect Third Conditional Form
Incorrect: If she had studied hard, she would pass.
Correct: If she had studied hard, she would have passed.
⚠ Subjunctive Error in Hypothetical Expression
Incorrect: If I was you…
Correct: If I were you…
8. End of Lesson Check
You should now be able to:
✅Identify all four conditionals
✅ Use correct tense patterns
✅ Express real vs unreal situations
✅ Avoid mixed structure errors
