2. Mixed Tense Reporting
Direct:
She said, “I have finished my work, and I will submit it tomorrow.”
Indirect:
She said that she had finished her work and would submit it the next day.
Notice:
Present perfect → past perfect
Will → would
Tomorrow → the next day
Pronoun shift
Multiple changes happen simultaneously.
3. Reporting Conditionals
Direct:
He said, “If I study harder, I will pass.”
Indirect:
He said that if he studied harder, he would pass.
Backshift applies to both clauses.
Direct:
She said, “If I had known, I would have acted differently.”
Indirect:
She said that if she had known, she would have acted differently.
The third conditional usually remains structurally the same.
4. Reporting Modal Perfect
Direct:
She said, “I must have forgotten.”
Indirect:
She said that she must have forgotten.
Modal perfect usually does NOT change.
Direct:
He said, “I can finish it.”
Indirect:
He said that he could finish it.
Modal shifts:
Can → Could
May → Might
Will → Would

Direct:
She said, “He told me, ‘You should work harder.’”
Indirect:
She said that he had told her that she should work harder.
Layered backshift:
Told → had told
You → she
6. Reporting with Past Reporting Verb + Present Truth
Direct:
The teacher said, “The Earth revolves around the Sun.”
Indirect:
The teacher said that the Earth revolves around the Sun.
No backshift for universal truths.
7. Advanced Reporting Verbs with That-Clauses
Direct:
She said, “I did not take the money.”
Indirect:
She denied that she had taken the money.
Direct:
He said, “I made a mistake.”
Indirect:
He admitted that he had made a mistake.

⚠ Time Expression & Future-in-the-Past Error
Incorrect: She said that she would have finished tomorrow.
Correct: She said that she would finish the next day.
⚠ Incorrect Conditional Backshift in Reported Speech
Incorrect: He said if he will study, he will pass.
Correct: He said that if he studied, he would pass.
⚠ Wrong Verb Pattern After “Deny”
Incorrect: She denied to take the money.
Correct: She denied taking the money.
