English Grammar Mastery: From Foundations to Fluency

1. Lesson Overview

In this lesson, you will study the past continuous tense, which is used to describe actions that were in progress at a specific moment in the past.

The past continuous emphasises that an action was ongoing or unfinished at a particular time in the past. It is commonly used in narratives to describe background actions or situations that were happening when another event occurred.

The past continuous is formed using:

was / were + verb-ing

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • form the past continuous tense correctly

  • describe actions that were in progress in the past

  • recognise the role of while and when in past narratives

  • distinguish between past simple and past continuous

2. Concept Introduction

Consider the following sentences:

The researcher analysed the data.
The researcher was analysing the data when the system failed.

Sentence Meaning
analysed the data completed past action
was analysing the data action in progress in the past

The second sentence uses the past continuous tense to describe an action that was ongoing when another event happened.

Example:

The team was conducting an experiment when the power went out.

3. Core Explanation

The past continuous tense describes actions that:

  • were happening at a particular time in the past

  • were ongoing when another action occurred

  • formed the background in a narrative

The structure is:

subject + was / were + verb-ing

Example:

The technician was repairing the equipment.

Component Example
subject the technician
auxiliary verb was
main verb (-ing) repairing

This tense focuses on the ongoing nature of the action in the past.
